IMS System

IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) is the next generation platform for IP based multimedia services. IMS was originally conceived in the late 1990s as part of a plan for worldwide deployment of mobile telecommunications networks that would interface with the public switched telephone network (PSTN). It provides integrity of voice, video and text services in cellular and wireless networks.
IMS, itself is not a technology, but rather it is architecture. IMS facilitates the use of IP (Internet Protocol) for packet communication in all known forms over wireless or landline. However one of the key enablers for the architecture is the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP), a protocol that has been devised for establishing, managing and terminating sessions on IP networks. Reducing the cost of services by Internet Communication, supporting different communication methods, an efficient control mechanism and supporting LTE leads the popularity of IMS.
Fava Pars consulting firm provides a test-bed based on open source tools and self-development software in order to reach the following goals:

  • Practical evaluation of standards and protocols
  • Test and evaluation of interoperability of tools and different programs in order to find the problems
  • Evaluation of tools implementation and techniques
  • Providing a test-bed for developing and implementing new ideas
  • Providing a test-bed for future development in IMS architecture
Our test-bed could be used by research centers and universities. Our test-bed includes:
  • IMS core servers: We have three main servers, named I-CSCD, P-CSCF and S-CSCF. These servers are responsible for signaling and sessions control. Furthermore, HSS server is used for storing customer information and their credit. Open IMS Core as an open source tool is used for this section.
  • Charging servers: These servers are responsible for billing and registering user’s transactions.
  • Application servers: Services such as VoD, Presence, XDM, Ringtone and Conference are provided via Application servers. We used open source tools such as Mobicents and SEM for Application Servers.
  • PSTN gateway: This server is a getaway between PSTN and IMS.
  • Customized Client’s software for Desktop, Mobile and Internet users.
